SERGIO ROSSI: Spring/ Summer 2010 Collection

Sergio Rossi is by far one my favorite shoe designers. His shoes have been worn by the likes of Keira Knightly, Eva Mendes, Penelope Cruz and more. His new collection is out and I thought I would share some of my favorites and not so favorites with you!

WHAT TO WEAR: Rainy Dayz

The weather has been so crazy the last couple of weeks. One day it's cold and the next day it's hot or raining. It's already hard to enough to find the perfect outfit without Mother Nature changing her mind every five minutes. Since today was a rainy, dreary day, I decided to jot down some tips on being fabulous on a day like this.

ADD COLOR
Don't feel like you have to look depressing because it looks depressing outside! Add some color and be rebellious. Try a patterned umbrella or bright rain boots.
ADD A CUTE TRENCH COAT
You can find a trench coat in just about any and every color. It doesn't have to be a long ankle length trench coat either. Go for a short one and you can even change up the belt.
ACCESSORIZE
Accessories can really make an outfit. Try a cute scarf or headband. Even a belt can change the dynamics of your fit.

CASUAL VALENTINE'S DATE

For a casual Valentine's date, your dress code should be just that - casual! You don't want to have to walk or be active in six inch heels! A cute dress with low pumps will work perfectly!

FORMAL VALENTINE'S DATE

For a formal date, at a formal restaurant or any upscale activity, you can go for glamour or sexy, but becareful not to overdo it! A cute cocktail dress or long gown will make your night a night to remember!

As long as you know you are looking good, the only thing that matters now is having fun!

Accessories can take a plain, dull outfit and turn it into something exciting and new! One accessory that I love shopping for are belts. The right belt can make your fit pop! The thing is finding the righ belt in the right color or size. Here are some tips on wearing the right belt for you via Shopgirl at chron.com:

Try a belt even if you have a large waist. A belt can give the impression of a narrower waist and an hourglass figure, even if you're larger around the middle. The trick is to find a wide belt with a buckle slightly smaller than the belt. Also, a belt in the same color as the outfit is slimming.

Never wear a belt too tightly. Muffin tops (that mid-fleshy overhang) are simply a no-no when wearing a belt. If it's that tight, get a larger size.

Belt your true waist. When you wear your belt on a your true waist, instead of at the top of your pants, it creates a more feminine, hour-glass shape. So instead of belting the pants, belt a cardigan over the pants.

Use belts as jewelry. Loose chain belts that hang low can add understated glamour, much like jewelry.

Go with the essentials. If you can afford only a few belts, try these: a black patent belt (skinny or wide), an animal-print belt and a wide belt (either in leather or elastic) in basic colors, such as black, gray and red. Always try them on before you buy.

Here is my interview with model Cairo Love out of the 850. She is definitely destined for great things!

How and when did you start modeling?

I was an ugly duckling growing up and was never provided the same opportunities as my siblings who modeled for Elite Model Management. It was not until I graduated from highschool that I garnered enough confidence and began to come into myself physically that I realized modeling was an avenue I could finally enter. I joined Images Modeling troupe Summer 2004 and it all went from there. I was the head model for VIP Marketing and Promotions, then eventually relocated to Atlanta and appeared in a L’oreal commercial, couple videos, and fashion shows and it took off from there.

Do you feel that the fashion/ modeling industry is competitive?

It all depends on what fashion/modeling industry is to that individual. For the high fashion industry, it is competitive because industry heads KNOW what they want and they do not budge for the qualifications. It is much more competitive for African-American females who want to enter into the high fashion world due to their race and curvy shape. It is a little easier for black females who are of African descent due to the given ethnic, exotic looks that the high fashion industry looks for. Like for me, I am part Egyptian/Nigerian so that helps me stand out physically in a room full of black American females at a casting. On the other side of the industry, the urban market is competitive for its own kind because there are way too many females who are willing to degrade themselves for the greater good while the REAL ones have to work harder to make it. Also, the urban market is competitive for dark skinned females as most urban magazines/publications and videos only highlight light skinned females over the dark skinned ones. It’s like the white high fashion world adores dark skinned females while the urban market shies away from its own kind…weird. But no stress because there is WAY much more consistent money to be made with the high fashion market than with the urban market…being in videos WILL NOT make you successful….lol

How do you spend your time when you're not in front of the camera?

Hahaha….when am I EVER not in front of the camera? Lol.. well when I am not doing a photo shoot or performing an on camera interview or doing mini photo shoots with my digital camera I am studying. I am currently attending Florida A&M University getting my Master’s in Health Administration as well as supervising/assisting the Nappy Boy DJs and Dreamz Studio owned by TPain’s Official DJ, DJ Lil Boy. Also, hosting for 850Live interviews. My time is spread out well and I know I live a BUSY life but I LOVE it…it’s self fulfilling.

Are you signed with an agency? If not, is that a goal?

I am not signed with an agency. I have been out doing all the networking and the leg work that got me to where I am today. It would be nice to be signed to an agency but even if I was I still would do all the leg work at the end of the day…lol...

Have you always wanted to model?

I have always wanted to model and appear in commercials, print ads, movies and runway shows especially for Zac Posen. But I also share a love for the art of music and thus my focus has shifted from wanted to solely be a model to wanting to work behind the scenes in the music industry doing artist development. Aside from that I would also like to be a TV personality and the go to VJ.

Which photographer do you dream about working with in the future?

I would love to work with Mickey Smith, he is a photographer for Vogue. I absolutely adore his work.

Describe a shoot that you had the most fun working on.

Hmmm….let’s see. Well the shoot I had the most fun on would be when I shot with a local photographer Jayell Latrell with Risonistic Photography. We did a shoot at a studio that had sooo many props there to choose from and wardrobe plus a kick ass makeup artist. Everything was fun and went well….sad part is his computer crashed and the images were lost….oh well…lol.

What beauty product can you not be without?

The one beauty product I cannot be without is shower gels. I love taking baths and smelling good and having soft skin…couldn’t do without it..espeically Halle Berry’s line of shower gels…absolutely love it!

Who are some of your favorite designers?

My favorite designers range from urban to high fashion and include Betsey Johnson, Ralph Lauren, Zac Posen, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Anna Sui, Gianfranco Ferre, Elie Saab, Dries Van Noten, Pierre Cardin, Nanette Lepore, Noram Kamali…man I could name so much more but we’ll stop here…..Santino Rice, Isaac Mizrahi, Vera Wang, Chloe….so much.

What piece of advice can you give to those young women trying to be in the fashion/modeling industry?

The advice I would give is to be persistent and continuously keep knocking on doors because eventually someone will open the door…the question is what are you going to do? Are you going to stand there? Walk through? Or run straight through it…that determines your future success. Also, be diverse and open minded…don’t be stuck on one thing….think outside the box because the more you expand your mind and horizons the better your chance are of reaching the top. Glamour's 2009 Women of the Year Awards

This year's Women of the Year Awards was held at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

With Rihanna being steadily in the spotlight lately, it's not hard to believe that she was an honoree. You can't deny that she has a great fashion sense and has been put to the forefront of the fight against domestic violence.

Serena Williams, another honoree, has done so much, not just for African American women , but for all women in sports! She is also a fashion designer. Her Serena Williams Foundation has also opened a secondary school in Kenya.

Then there is Susan Rice. She is the first African American woman to hold the title US Ambassador to the United Nations. Her latest acheivement is getting the U.N to enforce a zero tolerance policy on sexual violence.

Maya Angelou was also an honoree. She is one the greatest poets in the world!

First Lady Michelle Obama received honorable mention.

How to rock natural hair!

If you are an African American woman or anyone who uses chemicals to wear straight hair, then going natural can seem impossible! But there are several options you have, when trying to transition from chemically straight to naturally curly or wavy hair.

However, before we get to that, let's take a look at some of the reasons to go natural in the first place:

1. Chemicals.
The chemicals used in lye and no-lye relaxers, such as sodium hydroxide, guanidine hydroxide, lithium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonium bisulfate, ammonium sulfate, and ammonium thioglycolate (all of these chemicals are corrosive). have been proven to have some disturbing effects. When you put chemicals in your hair we are enabling them to get close to your skin, the largest organ of your body! You’re also forced to depend on these chemicals and end up exposing yourself to their dangers time and time again.

2. Damage.
Most of the chemicals from above cause permanent damage to our hair. They dry your hair out and damage the ends. Also, chemically straight hairstyles often require the use of heat to maintain them in between chemical applications, which can dry out and cause damage to your hair. This damage, in addition to any coloring chemicals, can destroy your hair.

3. Pride.
Curly and wavy hair can often be wild and difficult to manage, but once you get it trained, you can be proud of your natural hair! Whatever grade of curl you have, there are many options to wear your hair both straight and curly! You can be proud of who you are naturally!

Transitions

1. All Gone.
For most people making the transition, this may be too extreme, but if you're bold, chop it ALL off! This way there really is no transition! Cutting it all off gives you the opportunity to start fresh right away! Be bold!

2. Braids.
With this options, you might cut off some of the chemically straightened hair and then wear braided styles until you have eventually cut off all the chemically straightened hair without having to do it all at once. Be careful though with micro-braids. This style is notorious for breaking off the hair, especially around your edges. Do something, like cornrows, that won't put as much stress on individual areas of hair.

3. Wigs.
This approach is similar to braids, but with the added benefit of options. Using this way of transition, you would cut off some of the chemically treated hair then get your hair cornrowed in a simple style. Wear a wig cap to help protect your hair, then find a few good wig styles that work well with your face and style. This gives you variety and you can still wear straight hair styles if you want.

4. Weaves.
Weaves also go back to braiding. Get a good trim before you get the weave. Then the key is to either get a full-head weave. While transitioning, it's harder to wear a partial head weave that require some of your hair to be shown. Avoid the use of glue, opt for sew-in or wig-cap "weaves".

5. Locks.
You may choose to go natural and lock your hair up, twisting the strands together to form the locks. This way of going natural is a bit less flexible than the previous methods, because once your dreads grow it becomes almost impossible to wear a wig, weave or braids. This transition leads right into the end style. Many people who have locks say that they store energy.

"I like to say that fashion is a whole other language. The creative process and skills it requires to train your brain take many years to master. I honestly did not think Designing was going to be so much work! First, you must envision your design and go through, in your head, how the entire garment must be constructed. Then, you sketch it out on paper, adding all the construction details. After that, you must create the pattern for the garment, which requires a whole lot of measuring, angles, and very meticulous work. You must be very good at math and be very precise, otherwise, your garment will not fit properly, or major glitches could occur. Next, comes pinning the pattern pieces onto fabric and cutting it out. Some even choose to do what is called a “Muslin”, a pre-fashion fabric garment of your design to make sure everything fits correctly. Lastly, you must sew the garment together, which also takes great knowledge and skill. I have been learning something new every day! I have been involved in numerous fashion shows, had articles in a lot of magazines, worked as a Stylist, and have been asked to sell my designs at many events around Tallahassee. Along with my garments, I also have a jewelry line that debuted in July 2009. Jewelry is quite different than designing clothes; however, it requires the same amount of creativity. I love experimenting with all different kinds of beads, jewels, metals, stones, and more! I am currently working on my Fall 2009 line that will be debuting probably in late October. I am working hard and am so excited! The overall style of this line is going to be very chic and put together. I want everything to be tailored and constructed perfectly to convey my quality clothing and a sense of confidence. It is extremely classy and sophisticated all in one! I would definitely say that the best feeling comes when you finish a whole piece, when you see it walk down the runway, or if you have a client, when their face lights up in awe! One of my clients at the moment is Miss Black Tallahassee and I am designing dresses for her social and political events and also for her portfolio. I have been getting that expression from her and it feels amazing. Above all, passion is key. WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY?

AFTER ALL THE RESEARCH I'VE DONE ON THIS TOPIC, I HAVE YET TO FIND A REAL REASON WHY PEOPLE (ESPECIALLY WOMEN) DON'T WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY. I MUST ADMIT THAT I DO HATE WHITE SHOES, BUT NOT JUST AFTER LABOR DAY, ALL YEAR ROUND! I COULD ONLY THINK OF ONE REAL LOGICAL EXPLANATION ON HOW THIS "FASHION RULE" CAME ABOUT. THIS WAS PROBABLY A CRITICAL THING TO TAKE HEED OF BEFORE THE INVENTION OF HEATERS & AIR CONDITIONERS. BUT IN THIS DAY & AGE, WHY DOES IT REALLY MATTER? Fight or Flight: Taking Control of Your Skin

FIGHT OR FLIGHT: HOW TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR SKIN

So you’ve tried everything in the book to take care of your skin and nothing works?

Well, don’t give up yet! There are certain types of products that work best for different skin-types.

Here some challenges people often have with their skin and some solutions:

1. If your skin is acne-prone: Use botanical face washes with microexfoliatong beads to help cleanse your skin and improve the texture problem: Also consider trying a revitalizing zinc and sulfur mask that disinfects the area while taking away excess oils and eliminates dead cells. Use for 30 min on the face and then wash with cool water. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, you can also contact a local estitician and inquire about their various facials for acne prone skin.

2. If your skin is dry: Be careful not to over-dry your face by washing it with a product designed for oily skin. Look for products that have moisturizing properties. Stay away from facial products with alchohol in them as this drys out the skin. During the colder months make sure you moisturize your face thoroughly before you go outside. If you find lotion doesnt give you enought moisture, try a cream. It's also helpful to put cream on before you go to bed, giving it time to penetrate into your skin. Another product that will help with dry skin is WATER!!Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day will also improve your skin's moisture!

3. If you sunburn easily: Even women of color can burn! It's important that if you are prone to sunburns, you find a great sunscreen. SPF of over 30 is best if you head outdoors. Also try to stay out of the sun (if you can) during peak hours, (11:00 am to 5:00 pm). Also cover up, make sure your body is covered and wear a hat to protect your face. Try buying your facial productions like, make-up, lip balm and lotiona with sunsceen already built in for some extra protection!

4. Wrinkle-prone skin: If your skin is wrinkling at a faster pace than other people in your age group, you might want to invest in a few preventative products. There are many products that claim to prevent wrinkles and they aren't all created equal! It might be somewhat of a trial and error process for you to find the right product for you, but a good sunscreen wih an SPF of 30 or higher is a great start! From there look for Alpha, beta and poly hydroxy acids, which come from fruit, milk and sugar cane. They work by removing old, dead skin cells and helping to produce newer, younger-looking skn cells. Also work from the inside out, drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated and make sure you consume, through either food or supplements, vitamin A, C, E and K, which have been shown to promote radiant skin.

The first thing someone notices about you is your outer exterior otherwise known as your appearance. Your skin is the canvas of your body and who wants a messy canvas? Not you i hope. Cairo love has three simple steps of skin care routine to ensure you always shine through and through.

Step one: cleanse
Makeup and dirt clings to the surface of your face so it is important to wash away these impurities. Always use lukewarm water and work up a rich lather and use circular motions to cleanse your face. Don’t forget to do the same thing to your neck, .a lot of dirt from your face resurfaces on your neck as well!! Rinse with lukewarm water and follow up with cool water.

Step 2: tone
You can use rosewater (combination skin), azulene (for dry skin) or lactic acid toner (for oily skin) to tone your face. Toner’s restore the ph balance to your skin and close up the pores in your face. Witch Hazel is another natural toner that works wonders! Essentially it perks up your skin. A happy face is a happy you!

Step 3: moisturize
This step is essential to maintain a youthful skin appearance. Moisturize face and neck. If you apply moisture immediately after you have taken a bath or shower, the steam from the hot water will help in absorbing the moisture and softening of your skin.

An important aspect for overall skin care is to exercise! Without a healthy blood supply that is provided when you are active, your skin cannot be healthy (texture and quality).

Cairo Love moment: give your face a steam procedure! Run hot water in the sink or heat water in a pot on your stove, when the steam is at a comfortable level, place a towel over your head as u lean in the sink or over the pot to allow steam to enter your pores. You will begin to perspire, which will release impurities from your skin. After you are done steaming, splash cool water on your face to close your pores. Do this once a week. Leave your comments!

I did some research on Christian Louboutin, the man behind the Louboutin shoes that you hear Jay-Z, Kanye, and other hip hop & R&B artists talking about. Me personally, I don't really pay that much attention to the designer as much as the product, but Lady E sparked my interest when she mentioned that he was a Black designer. In high fashion, there aren't many minorities that have reached the level that he has, so i figured I would do a post about him.

I'm still not convinced that the French designer is full Black, but he's obviously some kind of minority.

Christian Louboutin (born 1964) is a footwear designer who launched his line of high-end women's shoes in France in 1991. Since 1992, his designs have incorporated the shiny, red-lacquered soles that have become his signature. On March 27, 2007, Christian Louboutin filed an application for U.S. trademark protection of this red sole design.

Christian Louboutin helped bring stilettos back into fashion in the 1990s and 2000s, designing dozens of styles with heel heights of 120mm (4.72 inches) and higher. The designer's professed goal is to “make a woman look sexy, beautiful, to make her legs look as long as [he] can.”

In his U.S. trademark application, Louboutin explains the inception of the signature red soles:

Louboutin also received inspiration for his infamous, lethal-looking stilettos from an incident that occurred in his early twenties. He had visited a museum and noticed that there was a sign that forbade women to enter while wearing sharp stilettos, for fear of damage to the extensive wood flooring. This image stayed in his mind, and he later used this idea in his designs. "I wanted to defy that," Louboutin has said. "I wanted to create something that broke rules and made women feel confident and empowered."

Scene tutus have been around for awhile but they are finally making their way into the club scene of Tallahassee. Worn the right way, you can make a hot fashion statement. Unfortunately, most of the attempts I've seen get a huge F-Fail. Like I always say, you don't have to show your treasures to get attention ladies!! We all know that the tutus originate with dance, but you don't want to look like a ballerina in the club. Do Not Wear Leotards With Your Tutu! It's not a good look! I personally don't like to be mooned on the dancefloor. Shoes that lace up around your ankle are also a no-no. Stay away from ribbons and barrettes. If you are old enough to enter a club, then you are definitely too old to be wearing ribbons. Just for honorable mention..your hair does not have to match all the colors in your tutu.

Under your tutu, you should wear a pair of tight boy shorts, preferably a pair that blends in with the tutu or a pair of leggings.
